Plastic Energy As everyone knows, the world is drowning in plastic. Conventional waste management can’t handle soft plastics — so, instead of being recycled, these materials end up in landfill, incinerators or the environment. Step forward Plastic Energy, whose patented technology transforms previously unrecyclable end-of-life plastic waste into plastic that’s as good-as-new. The senior team behind this revolutionary recycling technology came to us just before a period of growth. They were looking to up their brand game and find some consistency, while educating their target audience on the plastic problem and their incredible solution. As a growing company with teams all over the world, each using the brand in different ways, they asked Outfly to become their brand and content guardians. The designers started by refining Plastic Energy’s brand family to a minimalist palette and a sleek, professional feel that reflected the company’s expertise and reputation for professionalism and efficiency. The strategists meanwhile explored different ways of giving the core brand a deeper purpose, eventually arriving at a unique tagline anyone could understand: Recycling plastics that no-one else can. Having spent a lot of time absorbing complex details about plastic recycling problems and Plastic Energy’s world-changing but highly technical solution, the designers set out to create supporting brand assets that would allow anyone, young or old, to understand and even enjoy learning about the process. Asymmetrical 3D iconography and immersive technical illustrations opened everyone’s eyes – educating those who were new to the field, and inspiring those already working in it. The culmination of these assets was the establishment of a signature brand style so compelling that global blue-chip partners were lining up to be featured in it. Outfly then translated this modern, playful yet professional brand position into a new website for Plastic Energy. Through short form animated 3D assets and longer, more in-depth video content, the site became a place where anyone wanting to learn about the technology could access and understand the content quickly, but also appreciate the contextual nature of the solution. After going live, dwell time on the website increased 10-fold. Back in the real world, Outfly delivered the interior design for Plastic Energy’s corporate offices, creating a bright, warm office that integrates the brand palette with bespoke furniture and branded details, such as the custom kitchen feature wall. Our team has continued to support Plastic Energy’s growth ever since, designing industry-leading 3D animations and campaigns. These include the video-led campaign for a first-of-its kind circular recycling loop that attracted international press and became the proof of concept for Tesco to launch the UK’s largest soft plastic recycling network in 171 stores. We’ve partnered with Plastic Energy for five years now, in which time they’ve grown from a team of 10 employees to 92, built partnerships with some of the world’s biggest companies and raised $170 million. Next stop: IPO!
